Tool calling

Tool calling is the process by which an AI agent selects and invokes an external tool, API, or business system to retrieve information or take an action.

Why it matters

It turns an AI system from something that only talks into something that can get work done. A voice agent can look up an order, check availability, update a CRM, or book an appointment during the conversation. Reliable tool calling also requires permissions, input validation, and clear handling when a tool fails or returns an unexpected result.

What it looks like

A caller asks to move an appointment. The agent checks the scheduling system, offers an available time, confirms the choice, updates the booking, and records the change in the CRM before the call ends.
